Lake Jasna

-Europe.Slovenia.UpperCarniola.LakeJasna-

Lake Jasna is one of the prettiest lakes I have seen. It is made up of two artificial lakes which are interconnected. It is located very conveniently by the edge of the Triglav National Park of Slovenia. Less than half an hour drive to the border of both Austria and Italy makes this an easy place to visit and there are no entrance fees in case you are wondering.

What to do at Lake Jasna

Walk around the Lake

Take a leisurely stroll around the Lake Jasna. It takes around 20 minutes. It is one of my go-to places when I am in need of some calm or just to enjoy the views. Stopping once a while to see some antics of the ducks or to catch sight of some fishes. The viewpoints are amazing at different sections of the Lake.  Check it out on the video below.

Drop by for some snacks and drinks by the Lake shore

There is a restaurant at Jasna Chalet Resort serving food and drinks by the Lake. Enjoy the amazing views while you eat. I have not eaten there so I can’t tell you how good it is. I normally lunch at nearby Krajnska Gora where there are plenty of restaurants.

There are smaller stalls offering coffee and ice cream as well – if you choose to stop.

Enjoy the water in summer

The water flowing into the Lake is from the mountains which means that it is really cold and so people swim mainly in summer. The canoes and paddle boards are also popular activities. There is a tall wooden platform where people dive from. That or to have a great view over the Lake from a higher viewpoint.  Needless to say there are plenty of things happening especially when its a warm nice day out.

Other highlights around Lake Jasna

There is a statue of an Ibex with Golden Horns. Very popular for a photo opportunity with it. It is said to be the guardian of this Lake.

There is a pretty water mill – that I just love to sit and look at.

There are other pretty photo spots around here as well – like this sage with a book.

How to get to Lake Jasna

By Bus from Ljubljana (Recommended)

There is an hourly bus from Ljubljana Tivoli to nearby Kranjska Gora run by Arriva. The journey is about 2 hours long and passes through another lovely and more famous Lake Bled. You can get bus tickets at the bus station or online

*Money$aver Tip: (July 1 2021 – June 30 2023) Buying a ticket for travel during the weekend is 75% cheaper – so doing the trip by bus for the above route costs only Euro2,70 per way!!

By Train from Ljubljana

There is no direct train – you would have to travel from Ljubljana – Jesenice and then take a bus from there to Kranjska Gora then walk about 2km to reach Lake Jasna. I don’t recommend the train as there are 2 legs to this journey. Take the bus instead.

By Car / Taxi from Ljubljana

Going by Taxi or car takes about an hour but a taxi costs more than Euro100 per way. May be worth it if you are travelling with luggage and have more people sharing a taxi.

A car is always convenient for getting around without a real time table. If you choose to drive then do note that if you are coming from direction Krajnska Gora – whereby the Lake in on your right: parking near to the Lake has a fee of commonly 2 Euros / hour (might differ in seasons).

*Money$aver Tip: For free parking; drive for a further 3 minutes and there are parking spaces across the road for free.

From Villach (Austria)

I mentioned earlier that Lake Jasna is close to the Austrian border. The Austrian city of Villach which is also where I am based is the closest city to Krajnska Gora / Podkoren. With the car you travel over Wurzen Pass to arrive in 30 minutes. When there is good weather, there are many bikers using the Wurzen Pass for road trips.

By public transport – you would have to take the train to Jesenice and from there the bus to Kranjska Gora.

  1. Lake Jason looks like a beautiful place to visit. We missed it on our last trip to Slovenia but I will make sure we visit the next time. The views are wonderful and remind me why I really love to visit lakes. The ice cream looks good too.

  2. Those emerald waters are breath-taking. I could lose myself in these calm and pristine environs. The ibex truly is Instaworthy, as is the sage with the book. I loved the video too and subscribed to your channel.

  3. Slovenia is definitely on our travel wish list. But I have not done any planning yet. So good to read about Lake Jasna and see the beautiful outdoors that awaits us. I can see why you thought this might be one of the prettiest lakes you have seen. Awesome that there are no entrance fees. A walk around the lake and a snack with a view sound like a perfect way to enjoy this gem. But I might be passing on a swim in the lake!

  4. We’ve been to Slovenia in the winter and it was simply incredible! But so far we’ve only done Lake Bled and we felt like we only got to touch the surface of the country. We’ve been dying to go back in the summer season with our campervan and discovering more of the Julian Alps. I’ve never heard of Lake Jasna but this is a good start to add to our list. It sounds way more offbeat for a lake destination!

  5. Slovenia has been on my dream list for a long time, but now I know that I should start realizing this dream, and I will add Lake Jasna to the bucket list. This lake looks simply stunning with its clear water and the reflections of Triglav National Park peaks in the water. It’s great that you can get there from Ljubljana by bus. I love the idea of walking along the lake and taking pictures of the Ibex with Golden Horns.

  6. A stroll around Lake Jasna seems like the perfect way to unwind and relish in the scenery of the mountains and water. No one can resist taking pictures here because the views are so beautiful. The statue of a goat-like animal by the lake would also make for a great photo opportunity. If I had the chance to visit, I would probably end the trip with a cold beverage at one of the lakeside cafes.

  7. Lake Jasna looks so beautiful! I have been in this area before, but didn’t make it all the way here. I stopped at Lake Bled and then Lake Bohinj, which is definitely much bigger but has the same clear waters. I can see why you find this place so calm, perfect for when you want to go for a relaxing walk or just want to spend a bit of time in nature.

  8. Oh my goodness! I can see why you say that it’s one of the most lovely lakes you’ve ever seen. That entry photo is SO impressive, especially with the reflection. I want to visit the natural areas of Triglav National Park of Slovenia, and I would definitely spend time by the lake. It’s beautiful! And I’d definitely make time for a coffee and ice cream.

  9. Slovenia has been in my wishlist for so long. Lake Jasna looks so pristine. I’d love to visit here. Restaurant with lake view is something I wouldn’t miss. The watermill looks charming and so does the sculpture of ibex with golden horns. I can understand why these are total photo-op places. Good to know that there are buses from Ljubljana and that the price is ridiculously low on weekends. Super tip!
