Medieval city of Rhodes

-Europe.Greece.Rhodes-

As we sailed into Rhodes, we made it a point to go on the top deck to catch sight of the ancient city. We tried to spot the Colossus of Rhodos and the windmills. But what greeted us was the impressive sight of the old city with its glorious town walls – if not for the cars, one can truly feel transported back in time.

Excursion in Rhodes

Doing some investigation about what to do and see in Rhodes during our cruise stop here, I wanted to see Lindos. However it is quite a distance away and I checked some bus tours but they were all full. During the course of checking I found a lot of people recommending to check out the medieval city and I am adding my own recommendation.

Seeing Rhodes with an independent booked tour

Rhodes port

At the port upon the ship docking, there are already many transport vehicles ranging from minivans to tour buses; waiting to whisk away passengers booked on a trip to their destinations of the day. If you want to book an independent tour , check out the options for Rhodes below. I was not able to join a tour to Lindos but I would definitely do so if I have another chance to visit Rhodes

Seeing Rhodes with a rented vehicle

Town walls of Rhodes

Above photo was taken aboard the cruise ship docked on the port: and within a very short walking distance are buildings with the red roof outside the town walls with signs “Rent A Car” – would be a great spot for picking up a car or motorcycle or even ATV for getting around Rhodes to explore. This would have been my favourite option except that we were pretty beat and not up for travelling too far. My goto option has always been RentalCars. Check out your preferred options below.

Exploring Rhodes by walking through the medieval city

In the end this was what we did to have a stressless day. We ended up strolling through the nice city dotted with impressive architectures, cobblestoned paths with lovely squares. Restaurants and shops lined the narrow streets and beckoned for people to come in and enjoy some shade from the afternoon sun. Fancy coming with us on the walk ? check out the video below

The medieval town is a unique blend of culture brought from the many powers that once governed it. Mosques , unique fountains, Byzantine and Gothic churches blend together to create a special ambience and truly worth admiring in this Unesco World Heritage site.

Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights

We walked through the shops and uphill toward the Palace or Kastello a medieval castle with Gothic architecture. When I first saw it , in my mind’s eye it would look natural and complete with a moat and a drawbridge but it was not to be. There is instead a very nice garden grounds with statues.

Don’t forget to walk the Street of the Knights – a highlight to feel how it must have been to walk the footsteps of people of the past. The path is very well preserved. Pre-book your admission ticket with Getyourguide

The Colossus and Windmills of Rhodes

I have not heard about the Colossus of Rhodes until I started to check on what to see in Rhodes. It is an amazing thing to learn that there was once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World here. I was eager to see the site of the purported wonder but learned that historians can’t agree where the site exactly was. One of the places is at the Mandraki harbour where now stands a stag and a doe as the guardians.

Getting to the site meant passing the majestic Saint Nicholas Fortress with its lighthouse. First came the tower, then the bastion and lastly the lighthouse.

The three windmills stand out at the eastern side of the Mandraki Harbour. The brown stones are the perfect contrast to the blue skies and blue seas around. They were used in the past for grinding corn for export. Watch the video of our walk through this area.

Summary

I did not have much time in Rhodes but the little I have seen of the medieval town has got me wanting to see more of this island. It will be on my list for a longer visit. Now here is hoping for rain and cooler temperatures to bring the raging fires devastating this lovely island to a halt. As of time of publishing this blog post: the fires continue to blaze.

  1. We visited a lot of Greek Island on different cruises but have always missed Rhodes. What a great first view as you sailed in. I would certainly want to wander I the medieval city. Always fascinating to see the blend of cultures and architectures in old cities like this. But can understand why you would put Lindos on your list for a return visit.

  2. I hope to visit Rhodes sometime soon. It looks charming. Going to this island by ferry is the first charming thing about it. I’ve heard of Colossus of Rhodes and it would be nice to go see the site where it once stood. The windmills are charming and as you rightly say, its perfect against the blue sky. Are they still functional?

  3. The mere thought of roaming through historic neighborhoods, surrounded by well-preserved architecture and rich cultural heritage, fills my heart with amazement. The architectural magnificence of the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights, the stories it holds within its walls, and the tradition of the Knights of Rhodes make it a truly stunning and engaging site. And the Rhodes Windmills! That must have been quite a sight. Thank you for sharing these marvelous experiences with us.

  4. I watched all the three videos. I must say Rhodes looks like a well preserved town and so clean and disciplined. It also looks hot. I would love to see the Colossus sight and the stag on the column. St Paul’s gate also was impressive. I have read so many stories about kinights, so that palace and street would definitely be a must see.

  5. I have not been to Rhodes yet. Colossus of Rhodes looks very impressive. I love the contrast of colors and the huge size of Windmills. I would love to walk that road leading to the windmills with all the different flags The first view as you sailed in looks totally awesome. There is so much of history and architecture to be learnt and admired at the Palace or Kastello. I am adding this to my bucketlist.

  6. The medieval town, the castle and the windmills of Rhodos look so charming. I can see, that one day is not enough to explore this wonderul Greek island. As you were there with a cruise ship, I guess you had dinner on the ship. But I would also love to explore the small restaurants on Rhodos.

  7. When I saw your first picture, I thought the architecture of the two buildings is not matching. After I read through your post, I found out that different powers governed Rhodes. No wonder. That’s a fun fact about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World in Rhodes where historians couldn’t agree with the exact location.

  8. Rhodes old town looks like a wonderful place to explore, especially with all the historical sites. I didn’t know it was a Unesco heritage site. I would love to see the site where the Colossus of Rhodes once stood. I’ve seen a similar place of a former site of the Ancient Wonders of the World, the Alexandria lighthouse, and whilst there is nothing there, it is still great to imagine how they used to look like. It’s good to know that you have options on how to visit Rhodes if the shore excursions are all full.

  9. This is interesting. A trip to the medieval town is such a unique experience. I agree with you that being here gives us a glimpse of how it must have been to walk in the footsteps of the people of the past. Glad they were able to preserve this rich and beautiful heritage.
