I saw Oprah’s speech after receiving her Award at the 2018 Golden Globes – All the Internet is buzzing about it. People even want to vote her for President after hearing it. Such is the power of speech, it has the power to move people.
It got me thinking – if I could have a superpower : maybe I would want it to be the ability to move people with what I have to say. To be a people influencer , that would be kinda cool! Then in typical Adele fashion , I thought about what could then go wrong.
I suddenly recalled a story / joke from long ago, “3 friends were walking and stumbled upon an ancient looking lamp – and of course they picked it up and rubbed the dirt off it. In doing so ,unleashed a genie who granted each a wish – each had to make a sprint down the road and shout out his wish and it shall be granted. The first guy thought about it and didn’t take him long to decide , he sprinted along the road and shouted “I wish to be a multi-billionaire!!!!!” and poof – a limousine appeared from out of nowhere with a driver holding the door open for him and he became filthy rich, just like that. Impressed the other two friends thought longer about what they would wish for . The second one was soon ready and made the sprint down the road and shouted “I wish to be the most popular person that ever lived!!!!” and poof – hundreds of friends he has never seen before appeared before him all wanting his attention. And the third guy , thoroughly impressed but felt a bit of pressure about what he would ask for seeing the success of his 2 other friends’ wishes and finally he was ready and ran down the road and shouted “I wish to be …” he tripped over a rock on the road and cursed “SHIIIIIIT” and he instantaneously turned into a huge pile of crap in the middle of the road. ”
Yeah, yeah there is a moral to this story, words have the power to also harm, as the third guy realized too late before getting his “wish”. Summarily they are also mere words – actions speak a shitload louder in the end.
