Woke up to a cloudy day and here’s hoping that the clouds will provide a blanket from the cold that has been prevalent for the past days.
Today is a trip to the Golden Circle area. As usual it is a bit of a drive to get there. But the landscape more than make up for the vast distances
This was a touristic bus tour and so the schedule was set by the tour team. The first stop was more of an advertisement trip with a stop at a growhouse that grew primarily tomatoes year round. Its interesting but does not warrant a trip to Iceland for seeing it.
The second stop is more interesting and was at the geothermal area where the geysers are. Its not such a big area and there is a walk path. Where lots of people stop and look and wait is at the Strokkur the active geyser here that erupts every 6 to 10 minutes. Honestly if you know Yellowstone this one is a little bit less impressive.
After stopping for a snack and a short break, we were on our way again and this time to my highly anticipated sight of the Gulfoss. I have seen wonderful photos but I doubt its possible to make a bad photo here. The Gulfoss does not disappoint and to see it live is way more awesome than I expected.
After seeing the Gulfoss, its pretty hard to top, but then we went to Thingvellir National Park for viewing the continental rifts. It suddenly look familiar from the scenes right out of Game of Thrones which was filmed here. The rifts were impressive. Some more pronounced than others. I thought they would be just one divide but actually there were layers upon layers of them.
On that note it was the end of the Golden circle tour.
After that it was back in Reykjavik to look for dinner. I wanted to try something local and saw this..
Too exotic for me to pay 60 Euros for. So it was back to safe and yummy thai food.
