Being able to get to the beach from landlocked Austria is a luxury and one of the closest locations is the Slovenian Riviera. Although the coast is not very long, there are plenty of accomodation options here. It ranges from five-star Spa hotels to Hosts renting out rooms in their home. We went for the boutique hotel option : Second Life in Piran – Hotel Zala situated in the old town of Piran – steps away from the waterfront.

Arrival and Check-In to Hotel Zala
Something to know about Piran is that you have to park your vehicles outside of town. As we have luggage, we parked at Fornace garage beyond city limits. The good thing about this Garage is there is a free shuttle which will bring visitors to the town center.
We rolled our luggage about 4 minutes to the Hotel Zala. Check-in time is 3pm as is with most of the accommodations here.
Our check-in was fast and smooth and we were given a room on the 1st Floor.
Hotel Zala Room
Stepping into the room with earth tones and more space than I expected from the first external appearance. The first impression of the room is a good one. The bed is comfortable and the modern air conditioning was churning out pleasant temperature.
There is no coffee and tea making facilities in the room or a mini bar – however there was the all-important bottled water provided which is thoughtful for guests just arriving.
A big closet is available for storing clothing. A safe inside lets one keep valuables securely. A small desk is tucked into the corner.
For restful evening entertainment there is a flat-screen TV showing programmes channel in Slovenia as well as Austria to our surprise. So we could catch up with Austrian news.
The air flow and temperature was pleasant throughout our stay. The attached bathroom is big with a separate toilet and bidet. The shower area has strong water pressure. It comes with branded toiletries for showering and soap for washing.
The hotel being close to the beach , is bound to have wet swimsuits to hang out to dry. Glad to see that the room came with the facility.
Hotel Zala Facilities
Second Life in Piran – Hotel Zala has a restaurant on the ground floor and a roof top bar. The hotel also welcomes pets for additional charges.
Restaurant In Hotel Zala
The Hotel made good use of the space with an open-kitchen that enable guests to gander on their food as it is being prepared. The main wall is decorated with wine racks. This is the place where we got our breakfast included in the room price.
I rate the breakfast as exceptional – impressive to be able to provide such a big selection in a small space. They even cook eggs of your choice upon request. We got our sunny side-ups cooked just the way we like it.
Rooftop Bar in Hotel Zala
We went briefly to the rooftop bar. It was not very big but there were some people occupying the tables there, having drinks. All around were the rooftop of the other buildings.
The Verdict on Second Life in Piran - Hotel Zala
I cannot say that the Second Life in Piran – Hotel Zala is the best of the best. It does lack some common facilities like mini bar and coffee and tea making in-room.
However it more than makes up for it with its splendid location steps away from everything to see in Piran. I appreciate that it was not beachfront as the alley outside had not so much traffic. I was completely thankful for how quiet the room was with effective soundproofing. In combination with the comfortable beds , it was very conducive for sleeping in.
All in all – Hotel Zala had the things that mattered. I come to the highlight which was the breakfast spread the next morning. High quality servings of fresh food and fresh juices is not so common and we found it here. Together with the friendliness of the people there – I will definitely stay here again.
