Where did Parisians shop before there were shopping malls ? I had the opportunity to explore the Passages Couverts in Paris. This concept was ingenious. It’s common to have shops lining both sides of the street but the Parisians made covered passages with shops. Very charming and practical especially on rainy days. Some of the passages even start when the other ends, as in the Passage Jouffroy and Passage des Panoramas.
I was very much charmed by this side of the Paris right bank , the little shops intrigue me and beckon me inside for a closer look. It all is very intimate as the high ceilings provide natural light in the day. The different designs of each passage made me want to check out more. I only had time to see 5 as I walked my way from Hausmann Boulevard to the Louvre.
If you prefer a guided tour , then check out the walking tour in the link below.
Passage Verdeau
This is a charming Passage with little shops selling antiques , bookshops, a French Bistro and Holy Bol , a Thai and fusion restaurant.
Passage Jouffroy
I personally liked Passage Jouffroy a lot. The tiles remind me of olden times but the metal and glass makes it modern. The shops are interesting with old bookstores, an interesting toy shop and a very, very good tea room. The toy shop called Pain d’Epices has old toys that will stir up some pretty strong nostalgia.
A friend of mine told me about Le Valentin the tea room and this was the best tip ever because the pastries are super delicious. I was very lucky to find a cozy place in the corner. It was difficult to choose the pastries.
The famous Grévin Museum exits to the passage and is home to wax statues of celebrities. Here is the link for the tickets and opening times.
Passage des Panoramas
The Passage des Panoramas is a dream for stamp collectors. It has shops with old stamps and postcards , perfect to add on to your stamp collections. The passage retains its original facade which gives the impression of having stepped back in time. If you feel hungry for some Gyoza , there is the Gyoza Bar which sells of course Gyoza but at reasonable prices.
Galerie Vivienne
I don’t know about you but when hearing the name Galerie Vivienne , it feels like the place has some class to it. And of course I was right! This passage is elegant and filled with expensive shops. Compared to the others I have been, this one was out of my league in terms of shopping. Do go and admire the passage though, that’s for free!
Galerie Vero-Dodat
This Passage is closest to the Louvre Museum and is rather quiet. It attracts musicians as there is a music shop packing quite a bit of instruments. Besides there are art galleries and specialty designer shops here. Out of all the passages, this one had the least people but as you can see its a beautifully decorated passage and worth visiting.
I think this is an informative post and it is very useful and knowledgeable. therefore, I would like to thank you for the efforts you have made in writing this article.
