Jaz in the City Vienna

-Europe.Austria.Vienna-

Summer 2025 – time again to visit the capital city of Austria, Vienna. I went about checking where best to stay – as we were going to spend only a night in the city and had plans to visit museums. Deciding it was best to stay close to the center itself , I then zeroed in on my favourite spot – near Mariahilfer Road where I have stayed several times and found it very convenient. I stumbled across Jaz In the City – having starred it as a potential place to stay years ago. This time – the stars aligned and we booked a stay.

Arrival and Check-In to Jaz in the City

Our drive from Villach took around 4 hours with a short stop enroute. As per usual when we visit Vienna – we parked at the P+R at the outskirts and take the public transport into the city.

We arrived slightly after 1 pm and as soon as we walked in, we could feel the Hotel Vibe – an energetic young vibe with an old soul. As the name suggests the theme is centered upon music. The lobby area was tucked away in the right corner with sitting areas for waiting.

We decided to check-in even though the room was not ready and left our baggage at the Reception and took our backpacks to look for lunch. The check-in experience was a breeze : I had to only show my passport for the check-in procedure and filled out a form which was a standard process.

Upon our return to the Hotel , we took the keys and headed up to the Room.

Our room was on the 5th floor – and as we walked along the corridor we did not see or hear anyone – good news about sound proofing ? Hopes are high and fingers crossed.

We opened the door to the room – and found the setup pretty unique but at the end really optimal for us.

I was thankful for the air-conditioning on a hot summer visit.

The Bed Area

The room configuration placed the bed in a unique position but perfect because the air-condition was blowing from behind and perfectly cooled without us getting the direct blast.

The bed itself was very comfortable albeit pretty high! It even had a step at the foot of the bed that I had to use. Pillows were also good.

Only thing I found not so nice was the lack of side tables. There was one box/table on the left side of the bed. However the Hotel was very accommodating and offered to bring us a table.

We really like the lighting in the room – it was soft lights at different places which we appreciated. The bed also faces the window which lets natural light in adequately. The blackouts work wonderfully as well to keep the light out for sleeping in longer.

Storage

There are open storage areas for placing our bags and hanging clothes in the area behind the bed.

There is a safety deposit box.

Shower Area

The sink area is quite compact but has the necessary amenities including a hair dryer. The rain shower and hand held integrated shower – have sufficient water pressure. Only thing is there is no curtains to cover the area. So people who are there with non-partners may feel uncomfortable.

The toilet is a separate room, which I appreciate it as well.

Coffee / Tea Making

Coffee machine with capsules and a kettle with a selection of teas is provided and so is to our pleasant surprise two bottles of complimentary water in the fridge.

In-room entertainment

A standing television has the usual television channels as well as screen mirroring but unfortunately as we stayed only one night – did not have a chance to use it.

The room also interestingly has a yoga kit – with a rolled up mat.

The pièce de résistance of the rooms in my opinion is the record player which comes with a bluetooth-enabled sound system to listen to your fave tunes.  We borrowed a George Benson record from the reception to test it out and it was really nostalgic as we had turntables at home once upon a time.

Jaz in the City Facilities

Jaz in the City Vienna

We did not try the breakfast at the hotel but it is an option. The Rhythms Bar & Kitchen offers brunch, lunch, dinner and cocktails as well.  When we came back in the evening, live music was in full swing with dancers having a nice time on the dance floor.

Mariatrink is the rooftop bar – we went to for a drink and views. The DJ was spinning the tunes up there too. Very nice ambience and friendly wait staff.

Jaz in the City Gym Vienna

There is a gym and sauna facilities.

The Hotel has parking but it is a paid option. It usually is pretty expensive as it is in the city itself. Contact the Hotel for current prices.

If you are bringing your pet – this is a paid option too.

The Verdict on Jaz in the City Vienna

Jaz in the City Vienna is not any run-of-the-mill hotel; it is a meticulously curated experience that blends the energy of Vienna’s creative scene with modern hospitality.

The hotel’s strengths are undeniable. Its superb location provides the perfect balance of central convenience and quiet refuge. The rooms, with their bold, music-themed design and signature vinyl players, offer a memorable and special stay.  As far as uniqueness goes , the Hotel is outstanding but this also comes with quirks that might cause some inconvenience too such as that clear-glass shower stall that does not have any modesty coverage or the one-box side table or the extraordinarily high bed that made me feel like a dwarf sleeping on a giant’s bed.

The shared spaces, particularly the Mariatrink rooftop bar, provide a vibrant social scene that serves as a major attraction for a lively evening out – just take the lift up !

The people at the reception and at the rooftop bar were friendly and helpful – and we could place our luggage there before check-in.

Ultimately, Jaz in the City Vienna is a Hotel which I will stay in again particularly for its location , with access to the city center by walking and its proximity to Haus des Meeres and 2 subway lines.

To stay at Jaz in the City is to accept the hotel on its own terms—to embrace its melody, quirks and all. For those who do, the experience promises to be a memorable, rhythmic journey that captures the true beat of Vienna.

In the Groove: The Rooms & Their Unique Vibe

The rooms are the heart of the "Jaz" experience, with a modern, music-themed design. While most guests love the quirky features, some design choices present a classic case of style versus function.

The Vinyl Experience

The in-room record player is a standout feature. A vast majority of guests find it an "amazing" and memorable amenity, though a small number have noted issues with the condition of the records.

The Bathroom Design Debate

👍

The Pros

  • "Cool" & "Chique"
  • Modern, open layout
  • Appeals to couples

👎

The Cons

  • Lack of privacy
  • Glass walls
  • "Less efficient" for families

The open-plan bathroom with glass walls is a polarizing feature, highlighting the hotel's appeal to a specific, design-conscious demographic.

The Main Stage: Facilities & Shared Spaces

The hotel's facilities are designed to be social hubs, but the very success of these vibrant spaces can create challenges for guests seeking tranquility.

What Guests Enjoy Most

The rooftop bar is the undisputed star, followed closely by the high-quality breakfast. The gym and sauna are also well-regarded amenities.

The Rooftop Bar Paradox

🎉

Vibrant Social Scene

A "hotbed of cocktail culture" with live music and panoramic views.

vs

🤫

Potential for Noise

Guests on upper floors report noise disturbances at night.

The hotel's most celebrated feature is also a source of complaints, illustrating the challenge of catering to different guest preferences simultaneously.

The Conductor's Touch: Service & Staff

The hotel staff receive outstandingly high ratings for their friendly and welcoming nature. However, this excellent hospitality sometimes contrasts with minor, yet frustrating, operational hiccups.

The Service Dichotomy

9.3/10

Average Staff Rating

Guests describe staff as "super friendly," "welcoming," and "helpful."

🤝

Yet, guests also report:

  • Lapses in basic amenities (e.g., missing toilet paper).
  • Inconvenient housekeeping policies (e.g., towels not changed daily).
  • Slow service at peak times (e.g., long checkout queues).

This illustrates a gap between high-level hospitality and low-level operational efficiency. Expect warmth, but be prepared for potential minor procedural flaws.
