If you are planning to travel to the United Kingdom, you will need the newly introduced Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) . The ETA is being rolled out in stages to visitors to the UK. Below is some Frequently Asked Questions.

Who needs to Apply for the ETA ?

  1. Everyone visiting the UK and travelling through border control checkpoints from babies to seniors.
  2. Including visitors on layover who come in to the UK for a day visit. 
  3. Exception: Residents of the UK and residents of Ireland,  Guernsey, Jersey.
  4. Exception: Visa holders to the UK. 

In 2025 , most nationalities need either the ETA or a visa. By April 02 2025 European nationals as well. Check which you need in the link here 

How long is the ETA valid ?

  1. The ETA will be associated with your passport and is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires. 
  2. While the ETA is valid you can enter the UK as many times as you wish. 

When should I apply for the ETA?

  1. According to the website it usually takes 3 working days to get a reply.
  2. There is no shortcut to speed up the application. 
  3. Apply before travelling to the UK

How much does the ETA cost ?

The ETA costs 10 GBP per application. Each person has to apply individually even when travelling in a group. No refunds permitted.
