-Europe.Bosnia.CentralBosnia-
I had a glimpse of Bosnia years ago and was simply blown away by its beauty. This time as we drove through on the way from Zagreb to Sarajevo, we decided to do the trips enroute. I did not have any idea of the places we are visiting – the pictures alone left quite an impression.
Let’s see what you think of Central Bosnia.

Walled City of Jajce - Bosnia
The Walled city comprises of the impressive looking citadel with its ramparts . Arguably the best views of it are from the highway. The fortress built atop the hill overlooks the town. This medieval built structure has been designated a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Jajce was made a royal city when the King moved his court here. It continued its stronghold from the onslaught of the Ottoman forces until 1527 when it was finally overtaken. It was the last town to fall in Bosnia.
There are entrance fees to get to the fortress – Don’t expect too much except great views to the town below. Fees are also taken if you visit the catacombs below.
Pliva Waterfall - Bosnia
In the case of the Pliva Waterfall – I fell in love with the pictures of this falls that is also called the Niagara falls of Bosnia. In my opinion it is more the view of the town of Jajce above it that contributes to its beauty.
There is a parking lot nearby with small souvenir stalls and the viewpoint from above looks very good . However we were there during winter when the vegetation had little leaves. In late spring and summer , views will be partially blocked.
You can go below to the viewing platform to get a closer look at the falls. Preferably wear a rain coat as the sprays can get pretty strong. There is an entrance fee of 10 Bosnian Marks to get access to the platform.
However for best views which I missed – you have to get across the river Vrbas on the other side – On Google maps it should be marked “Jajce Waterfall Secret View” which does not appear so secret anymore , does it ?
Mlinčići Watermills Bosnia
This was yet another place where I saw pictures of and it convinced me enough to spontaneously put it on my list of must-visits. At first glance, they look like houses made for Hobbit-sized folks. They are actually watermills used to grind flour. Cute and functional , that is all what we want in life is it not ?
More impressive is that these mills survived this long, having been built during the Austro-Hungarian empire times (~1867 – 1918). We spent more time than we wanted here as it is so picturesque and I could not put the camera down anymore.
*Note: The park is free to visit , only the parking costs to be covered if you are here by car.
Travnik Fortress Bosnia
Unfortunately I can’t say much about the Travnik Fortress as we arrived after sun down even though our driver tried to get us there. The fortress itself which is the Old Town was locked up and we could not enter. We were outside the walls but even here we were afforded some nice views of the town. And then the fog came…
We did not have much luck to visit this time but this fortress like the Jajce Fort has seen its share of wars and violence in the past. Inside the walls are some towers and fortifications. The interior of the castle has been converted into a museum with historical and cultural exhibits on display.
What we ate in Jajce
As we did not change any Bosnian Marks , we asked our Driver if there are restaurants which accepts credit card and he said there are some and he will bring us to one.
Motel Plaza Restaurant
At the first look, I already concluded that this place will be highly priced – as it is located directly by the lake. There were a few guests inside even though it was winter and already past the usual lunch hour.
Our Driver spoke to the waiter and got us a table which we could freely pick from – we decided to order a BBQ Chicken Pizza shared between the both of us. The bill came to 13KM (6,50 Euros) and we found the pizza really good – Generous with both the chicken and the cheese!
When I read the reviews which were pretty bad I could hardly believe it – but granted they were dated a few years older. Our experience here was good – service and food wise and not to mention location as well.
My Verdict: Recommended: I would definitely go back for another round of BBQ Chicken Pizza.
