The Sheikh Zayed Grand mosque is an Instagram favourite that is understandable once you see it for yourself. Abu Dhabi and the UAE itself has many outstanding architectures worth visiting and the Mosque is truly one of them. We were there on a cruise stop in 2023 and I had to decide if I wanted to see it at night or during the day. Let me tell you it was not easy to decide. In the end I went with seeing it at night. I will be listing down our experience and some pros and cons of the day and night visit.

Know Before You Go to The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Opening hours
First thing for planning a visit is of course the opening hours of the mosque for visits.
Generally open daily from 09:00am to 10pm. On Fridays there is prayer time and closed from 12:00 - 3:00pm. The other consideration is during the holy month of Ramadan, visiting hours will be different. Here is the link for the opening times.
Plan and register your visiting time
As mentioned at the beginning , I had to decide which time of the day to visit.
In the summer months bear in mind the heat which can get pretty uncomfortable - but then also will have less people visiting during the day especially high noon.
Otherwise if you are looking to photograph the mosque with less people around ,then try to be the first to get into the mosque as soon as it opens or before it closes.
A popular time for visitors is 5:30pm which could mean a crowd but then you are able to catch the mosque with the sunset and the blue and golden hours which I am sure you have seen on Instagram.
Entrance to the mosque is Free, However you have to pre-register your visit online from this link
You will receive an email confirmation with a QR code that you can print out or scan from your phone. If you did not register don't fret! there are still kiosks to register before the security check at the mosque.
*Tip: Do the pre-registration from home before your visit to save time of doing it on-site.
Mind your dress code
As a place of worship, the dress code is strict here. Take care to follow the guidelines. The most common thing that gets ladies turned away is the bare ankles showing - if the gown is not long enough to cover the ankles. A quick fix is to wear long socks. Ensure that you have a head scarf for covering your hair.
People could rent abayas from the mosque in the past, but this service has been discontinued.
If you are looking to buy reasonably priced abayas : check out the shops in the underground mall of the mosque. The shops above are more pricey.
Security Check Point
Keep in mind that there is a security check point to pass through before being allowed entrance to the mosque. To make things smoother : just don't bring anything that could make passing through difficult. In other words , just bring what you need.
I had with me my handbag with my wallet with a small water bottle, mobile phone, my Sony Alpha camera with an additional lens. I breezed right through.
I decided to leave my tripod behind. Reason behind is it is not clear if a tripod is allowed. The officials from the mosque says that tripods are allowed outside of the mosque but not inside ??? It is understandable that you should be sensitive to photograph people who are praying - you definitely should get permission from the person you wish to photograph.
Is a tripod allowed ?

There are security people all over the place keeping a watchful eye that the visitors keep to the areas that is allowed. Therefore if there are many people during your visit, the security people could hurry you along and you will have no chance to setup your tripod.
My advice is , if you have to bring it, then choose something smaller and less conspicuous.
*Tip: Try to avoid bringing what some might consider professional looking photography gear - as there is another form to fill if it looks like the photo shoot is for formal purposes.
Is there Luggage Storage ?
Not officially - however you are advised to approach the security staff for assistance and they could help keep your belongings in the cloak room.
How much time to spend there ?
The usual length inside is from 1 - 2 hours to marvel at the Mosque. In the end , there is a limited path where you can walk around in. However if you are interested to photograph the mosque then absolutely more time is required.
Is there a free tour to join ?
Yes. There are timed tours conducted for free by the mosque officials known as the Cultural tour. Check here for the tour timings. These tours last about 30 - 45 minutes.
Don't do a Rihanna....
The famous singer was asked to leave the mosque for posing inappropriately for photos in 2013. The mosque is a sacred worship place and it is deemed disrespectful for fanciful striking poses.
*Tip: If they can kick Rihanna out ....
Entrance to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque
We entered through the dome and took the escalator down going through an underground mall. If you don’t have proper attire, consider buying an abaya from one of the shops here. After showing our QR code, we went through security and I was glad to have breezed through with clothing inspection and bag contents! after that a walk through spacious halls adorned with photos reminding me of walking through an airport with its travellators.

About the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
As soon as we got to the actual mosque grounds , I was awe-struck the whole way through. Starting from the reflection pools of calm water providing an extended view of the bright interior with its columns within. The archway shaped like keyholes provided an elegant design of symmetry everywhere you look.
The main courtyard
The main courtyard is breath-taking : there are clear walking paths and walking on the courtyard is not allowed. There are marked areas for taking photos and from the vantage viewpoint we saw the domes, minarets and the beautiful walls.
The white marble floor is one of the largest in the world with a flower motif that is both stunning as well as harmonic. The flowers featured are native to the region such as lilies, iris, roses and tulips.
At night the mosque is lighted up with exterior lighting projecting blue-gray clouds onto the walls. What is interesting is the lighting is adapted to the phases of the moon. During a full moon, the light will be whiter while a new moon will change the lighting to a darker blue. Very interesting to see the subtle changes.
Four minarets of Arab design line the corners of the courtyard and where the offices and library are located. There are 82 domes of different sizes of Moroccan style at the top of the buildings. What was a pity was the largest ones were under renovation during our visit.
The interior
Talk about the instagram spot everyone is taking of the mosque. The design is simply flawless in execution. The columns are decorated with a flower motif of semi-precious stones and the golden palm that sits on top!
The Prayer Hall
There is lots of awesomeness to point out at the prayer hall.
We start with the hand-woven carpet by more than 1000 skilled in their trade to produce what could well be the largest carpet in the world.
The columns are made of white marble and has a floral motif design. Amazingly there are 96 of them in the main prayer hall.
The wall behind is illuminated by fibre-optic lighting producing a subtle but impressionable effect for the most religious location of the mosque facing Mecca. This is the Qibla wall inscribed in Kufic calligraphy the 99 qualities of Allah.
The chandeliers simply draw your eyes to the top with their intricate designs – famously containing multi-coloured Swarovski crystals that will make an impression long after seeing it. Where do I get one for my dining room please ?
Side visit to the Wahat al Karama
After visiting the Grand Mosque head on over to the Wahat al Karama to get an awesome photo of the mosque from there. We went with the taxi – but alternatively there is a footbridge to use from the mosque. I came across information that there is a shuttle between the mosque and the monument but cannot confirm for sure if it is running. For shuttle information check here
If you get to visit one place in Abu Dhabi make it the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It is not everyday that one goes to a place that can hold slightly more than 40000 worshippers. Additionally I felt like I bore witness to an amazing feat of meticulous planning and flawless execution at every turn. Just go visit already!
