One Farrer Hotel Singapore – A 5-Star Urban Home Away From Home

Singapore is not a cheap destination. As I was looking for Hotels, I was amazed at the high accommodation prices. However it was also my birthday and I wanted to have some luxury. I happened to check 5-star hotels and came across One Farrer Hotel Singapore. The Hotel is lesser known as it is fairly new, having opened its doors in 2014. The attractive part for me was its proximity to the Farrer Park MRT station which is an important consideration for my place of stay. In very close proximity as well is the City Square Mall which is more frequented by Locals as well as being a part of Little India.

Arrival and Check-In to One Farrer

We arrived rather late in the evening and took the Shuttle from Changi which had a drop-off right at the One Farrer hotel doorstep.

We had options how to get to the Hotel which was fastest by Taxi around 20 minutes (Cost: ~25 SGD) , MRT in more than an hour with heavy luggages (Cost: 2.40 SGD /person) or what we decided on was to book the Shuttle via Klook 45 minutes (Cost: 9 SGD / person)

A first look at the One Farrer gave a warm feeling, not the kind of luxurious opulence that lacked warmth in some 5-star hotels.

The check-in was a breeze as it was already late. The reception was friendly and welcoming and informed us that we had a room upgrade. Not knowing what to expect we went up to the Room on the 19th floor.

A Nice Surprise

The very nice surprise was a Birthday Card and Cake in the Room! It was the most delicious cake I have had in a long while, with Pandan and coconut flavours – this really made my day. Thank you very much One Farrer Hotel!

Hotel Room in One Farrer

The Hotel Room was impressive at first glance – very spacious – 49qm .  I learned later that this is the Skyline Studio Room and located on the upper levels. Skyline Rooms comes with additional Skyline Lounge privileges and has one of the biggest rooms among Singapore Hotels. The bed was very comfortable – just the right hardness , as were the pillows. There is a pillow menu in the case the current one is not satisfactory. It felt very homey in the room and I realized it was due to the well-thought of detailed touches that made this so.

The Bedside has controls over the light options from reading to full lights on. It also has controls of the Window blinds and the sheers. The blinds were very effective for blocking out the first rays of the sun for a peaceful undisturbed sleep. When open, the full bay windows afforded a view over the city skyline. Impressive indeed.

The Bath area had a separated WC, a wide sink area (which I appreciate), a bath tub and a separate shower area. On our first night, the water was luke warm but tended on the cold side. After I requested a check from Housekeeping it was immediately fixed. Well done! I mentioned the small touches that made this Hotel a homey experience and this was the inclusion of high quality toiletries, from the towels to the shampoo and bath gels. In the WC area there is a phone included and the ability to set a status in the case one is indisposed at the moment.

There is a wardrobe at the corner equipped with iron and ironing board, as well as a safe. Included is also very comfortable kimonos for lounging around. Bath robes in the room allowed us to go to the pool much more conveniently without having to change at the pool.

There is a work desk  in the room with a charging international station – which means you don’t have to pack your international adapters along. A nice feature that I often find extremely useful. A coffee machine and tea making facilities along with a replenishable complimentary mini bar was also included.

Culinary Delights in One Farrer

Being Malaysian, its all about the food for me – and as I learned more about staying in the Skyline Rooms , it comes with Skyline Lounge Privileges which I will explain in more detail later in the post. Malik was very welcoming at Breakfast and showed us to a seat by the window. We had a choice of breakfast here which included the possibility of me having my soft boiled eggs! We learned later that there was a bigger breakfast spread available at the restaurant at reception level. we decided to check it out too.

There is a big breakfast spread at the general buffet, Singapore favourites from noodle soup, roti with curry, nasi lemak, dim sum to continental breakfast style. Big choices of hot drinks as well as cold, it has something for everyone.

Hotel Facilities and Services

For an urban hotel , I was surprised to find out that the One Farrer has an Olympic sized swimming pool on the 6th Floor. There were comfortable sun beds in the pool itself which provides a comfortable perch for lounging around and a Bar to order your favourite drink from nearby. I really liked that the views that was a mix of palm trees and the big city buildings around which was a feeling of a getaway without leaving the city.

Besides the pool, there is also a 24/7 gym for those who want to work off all the calories from delicious food from the One Farrer restaurants. The Hotel provides Spa services as well. I decided to check out the onsen which was gender divided. I went into the ladies section where I was alone at the time. It has a nice atmosphere with 3 different temperature pools. I felt as if I found a hidden secret place of my own.

Skyline Lounge

I later learned that we were in the Skyline Studio Room which comes with Skyline Lounge Privileges for Room Levels 18 – 20. It has a more intimate Skyline Lounge area which serves 5 meals a day;

Breakfast is a smaller spread than the one downstairs but has a cooked to order service (where I got my beloved soft boiled eggs.)  Available from 7:00am – 10:30am

Sandwich and Snacks from 12:00 noon to 2:00pm

Afternoon tea from 15.00 – 17:00

Cocktails from 17:30 – 20:00

Savoury / Sweets from 20:30 – 22:00

Skyline Residents have access to a private gym on the 19th floor. Check in and out services at the Music Room on the 18th floor – as well as 24 hour concierge services.

Included is the use of the private roof top pool.

The Verdict on One Farrer Hotel

My verdict on One Farrer Hotel is I would go back again and again whenever I am in Singapore. One of the main highlights if you read my blog and what is most important for me is location. We were always a few steps away from “home” whenever we were out as the Farrer Park MRT station was just a few steps from the Hotel. There is also the City Square Mall very nearby to the MRT station. It has fair amount of good food outlets all over and Fair Price Supermarket to get things that you missed out for your trip.

The Hotel itself is a real highlight. Even though we did not have much time in Singapore , we decided to spend a few hours exploring the Hotel Facilities using the pool as well as trying out the spa and the onsen. I had the warm feeling of being taken care of in the Hotel which is rare on my travels. It was my home away from home.

What we especially liked:

1. Quiet, Private, Modern and very clean Rooms

2. Friendly and welcoming Hotel staff.

3. Location !

I would like to thank One Farrer Hotel once again for the nice Birthday surprise and the upgrade to the Skyline rooms.
